[Perlfect-search] XHTML support?

Greetings! I've had to alter my markup to not use XML-style singleton
tags of the form:

 <META NAME="description" content="This is a description." />

Reason: It seems as if the /> part gets included in the description
when the results are rendered.

Clues/suggestions as to how to resolve this? I could delve into the code,
but I want to make sure this particular wheel hasn't been reinvented
first before I do that. :-)
