Because of the dots every two (four) digits are taken on their own. You
can only avoid this by modifiying the source (e.g. make indexer.pl save
the date as "ddmmyyyy" instead of "dd.mm.yyyy" and modify search.pl

Well, you can try if that works for you, but the web server will probably
kill the script. You can run the indexing process in the background if you
have ssh/telnet access to the server (call "nohup indexer.pl&").
