[Perlfect-search] Calling indexer.pl from web browser

The reason why we haven't allowed users to call indexer.pl from a web
browser are security related. The script would have to have write
permission to the user's account so that it can create the index. This
isn't a good thing for CGI script since it can be used as an exploit by
hackers. Also the indexer can take a long time to complete it's
operation. Running it from the browser would mean waiting there
connected to the internet until the indexer is finished. It is much
better setting up a cron job to reindex the site every few days or so...
Are there many people here for whom it would make a big difference being
able to run the indexer from a browser?
